Kaffir Boy is an autobiography and in this sense, the content is real. This personal story of a young man who grows up in apartheid South Africa traces Mark Mathabane's struggles and triumphs as he finds his way to America. Students may not fully understand the severe human implications of apartheid (let alone the meaning of the word). One of the goals of this unit is to expose them to this oppressive environment.

Unfortunately, nothing in life comes in a neat package. The content of Kaffir Boy is extremely serious, and there are many instances of horrific living circumstances. Descriptions can often be graphic (such as the depiction of male prostitution found on pages 68-74.) The horrors of his life are not spared for the reader. Students should be forewarned. We suggest focusing on the triumphs and survival of the narrator.

Kaffir Boy is a rich text covering many themes relevant to students' lives and the world in which they live. Students can exercise and sharpen their reading and writing talents. Because the autobiography is lengthy, some students may struggle with reading the entire book. We suggest (for lower skilled readers) having students read only selective chapters throughout the autobiography. In this way, students will continue to be engaged in the themes and still experience the sense of hope Mathabane experiences by the book's end.
