101 Fun and Interesting Questions To Perk Up Boring Gatherings Our idyllic holiday break could easily devolve into everyone staring at their own electronic devices in the car, and quiet, boring dinners resulting from too much together time with nothing new to talk about. I use Smart Board recordings regularly in the classroom. I find that parents and students benefit from viewing them outside of the school day. These recorded lessons were made available for play on our classroom blog. I would also use these math lessons during guided math periods and for math stations.

Kidblog was a great resource for my students to share their work. We regularly learned about new technology resources to use. For this specific piece we created QR codes that direct guest to a recording of our reading fluency!

Week

My students also had the task of choosing and recording fluency of a poem. For this blog submission the students were taught how to place a media recording into a post.

Remind 101 was used as reminders to parents for specific items we were learning in the classroom or for reminders of school events. Parents could easily register for the reminds to be delivered via email or text messages. It is a great way to keep communication with parents.

Guided Reading Workbook

Twitter acted as a great bridge to showcase what happens day to day with in the school community. Special events, classroom happenings, and students are all an importance in creating an online presence for the school.

Guided Reading Process

Padlet was used to generate summative assessments and questioning activities for the students. Questions were created for students to attach their thinking to. It was a great way to show one another how differently we think.

This is a mental math addition strategy created on Smart Notebook. Our strategies are placed on kidblog for students to reference to when they need help at home.

Students were very engaged in using online jeopardy quiz games to wrap up units. They were interactive and taught the students to work as a group to solve a question. The games were also placed on kidblog at the request of the students.

I think that my guided reading lesson went well after some reflection. My students were actively engaged the entire time. My lesson focused on determining the most important fact on each section of the text. Initially, I thought that my lesson was going to be geared towards referring to the text for support. However, after receiving feedback, I realized that my lesson was actually on finding important facts.

My students enjoyed the activities that I had planned. They whisper read each section of the text and were given large sticky notes to write their important facts. They were also given tricky stickies for words that they came across that they did not know. Towards the end of my lesson, the entire class started to line up fo go to their special. However, my students did not even notice and we continued with the lesson. It was not until one student finally noticed that all of us realized that we needed to conclude the lesson for the day.

Process

There were a few times that one student would call out during the lesson. I simply asked for a quiet hand and did not call on that student. Other times he had his hand raised while I was trying to explain something and I simply asked him to put his hand down. Otherwise, every student in the group was completely engaged. I do however think that my host teacher did speak with the class about how their behavior should be while I was being observed.

I was not able to implement the entire lesson upon observation. This was not because the students were not paying attention, we simply have started the Daily 5 centers a litter later then we usually would. We also were on a modified schedule because of PSSA’s. I finished the lesson the following day that I was in. The students were just as engaged which told me that they did actually enjoy the text and the activities that were planned.

Guided reflection protocol

The plan was followed exactly. I went through the special features that the text had and where to find the definitions to words that might have been new to them. I had comprehension questions to ask the students at the end of each section. The students were able to answer the questions and refer to the text to support their answers. Some students even used their tricky stickies in the process.

In the future, and based on the feedback that I received, I would include more modeling. I had just given the students the tricky stickies and did not show them how to use them. Potty racers 2unblocked evrything. I also did not model how to find the most important facts in each section. I would have gone through the first page and did a think aloud to show the students what I expected them to do. I would have done the same thing while modeling how to use the tricky stickies.

In the future, I would add the modeling piece as well as adapt the lesson to better serve the focus of finding the most important facts since it was intended of referring to the text for support. I would also try to add in the running record piece while meeting with a group.
